Free health checks taking place at Handsworth Community Cohesion Day, 7th May 2023

A full range of health checks - from blood pressure and blood glucose checks, eye and dental advice, dietary guidance and height and weight checks - will be offered to thousands of visitors on 7 May 2023 to mark Handsworth Community Cohesion Day. The event, which is being hosted by Nishkam Organisations in collaboration with key stakeholders, partners and the people of Handsworth, will celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King, and also help address inequalities with a collective commitment to working together in unity to bring peace and cohesion at a local neighbourhood level.

A team of expert clinical pharmacists, GPs, optometrists and dentists will deliver checks and dispense advice throughout the day, and dietician will also be on hand to offer nutritional guidance. Heart rhythm checks will be undertaken with a mini ECG, and height and weight checks will also be carried out. A series of expert talks will take place during the day on key topics such as diabetes and healthy living, as well as a panel discussion on Living Kidney Donation, part of our campaign funded by NHS BT, featuring clinical experts and people with lived experience.

The event will take place on Soho Road in the heart of Handsworth and in the Handsworth Job Centre Car Park (Temple Row House), Nishkam Health Centre Car Park, and St Michael’s School (Piers Road) playground. It will be open to the whole community activities from 10 am to 6 pm. The Coronation Big Lunch, and a special presentation, will take place from 1 pm to 3 pm.

The Handsworth Community Cohesion Day will offer various activities, including children’s sports and games, art projects with HeARTivism, exhibitions, free health checks, and wellbeing talks. Moreover, the event will feature performances and presentations, model steam engine rides, a petting zoo, and delicious vegetarian food, drinks, and snacks throughout the day.

Birmingham City Council Leader Ian Ward and Lord Lieutenant Sir John Crabtree are among the VIP guests who will attend the event. The Big Lunch initiative, created by the charity Eden Project Communities in 2009, will also take place during the event to combat social isolation and loneliness by encouraging communities to share an annual meal with their neighbours.

Additionally, the event will feature The Big Help Out, where volunteers from the community can join Nishkam SWAT, a charitable organisation that unites and transforms financially disadvantaged communities, who will be serving hot food and drinks to the homeless communities in Birmingham City Centre.

We are excited to host the Handsworth Community Cohesion Day to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King and promote peace and unity in our neighbourhood. We hope to bring people from all walks of life together and inspire them to work towards a common goal of creating a more cohesive and peaceful community.
