Nishkam Healthcare Centre hosts public health screening event to help tackle health inequalities

Around 40 people attended the walk-in public health screening event hosted by Nishkam Healthcare Centre on Saturday 12th April 2025. Situated on Soho Road in Handsworth, Nishkam Healthcare Centre aims to tackle the significant health inequalities present in the area by providing a one-stop integrated healthcare service delivered by expert clinical staff and volunteers to the local super-diverse population. In Handsworth, the average healthy life expectancy age is just 51 and a third of the children are living in poverty. Health screening events are hosted regularly at Nishkam Healthcare Centre to help support the local primary care services.

The event was led by a team of volunteers, including GPs, clinical pharmacists, ACPs and nurses, as well as students from the nearby Nishkam High School. The health screening included cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening, specifically screening for hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia and atrial fibrillation. The clinical team identified significant pathology including atrial flutter and multiple cases of high blood pressure. The NHS Blood and Transplant team were also present at the event to offer screenings for those able and willing to become plasma donors.
